How It Works

During the LipoSelection procedure, your physician identifies the target treatment areas.

The physician makes a tiny incision in the targeted area. A saline solution mixed with lidocaine and epinephrine is infused to help shrink blood vessels and numb the area to be treated.
The physician then inserts a thin probe that emits ultrasonic waves to emulsify fat on contact.
Once the fat is emulsified, it can be easily removed through the small incision with massage or suction.

Getting rid of underarm flab has been a challenge for plastic surgeons. Previous procedures could leave large scars or hanging skin, but a new technique effectively and quickly removes underarm flab.

The key to liposelection is ultrasonic sound waves. A doctor first makes two cuts less than half-an-inch wide at the patient's elbow and armpit, and then inserts an ultrasound probe through the incisions that melts the fat.

Liposuction removes the melted fat.

The procedure does not damage skin and leaves connective tissue intact, which allows healing after the liposuction procedure, said Dr. Kenneth Smart , a plastic surgeon at Centennial Medical Center.

The procedure takes about one hour per arm, and full results are seen in four to six weeks.

The cost for the procedure is about $3,000.

Smart said liposelection is not ideal for women who simply have have excess skin.

It's swimsuit season year-round in South Florida. Skimpy attire makes it harder to hide our bodies' imperfections.

Carlie Stene claims diet and exercise couldn't erase stubborn pockets of fat.

"There's the round thighs, touching of course. You've got the overhang there. You can't wear the low rise with that," Stene said.

So, she decided to melt them away.

"It's loosening up. It feels good. It comes out nicely," said Dr. Neil Zemmel.

Stene had liposuction with a new twist. It's called liposelection. In the procedure, a wand emits ultrasound energy that heats and liquefies the fat before it's removed.

"We actually apply the ultrasound energy internally and that ultrasound energy is extremely selective for the fatty tissue only," Zemmel said. "This allows the nerves, the blood vessels, the connective tissue to remain completely in tact while liquefying the fat only."

Some doctors claim liposelection contours the body better and it's a gentler procedure than standard liposuction, which means an easier recovery for patients like Maria Palacios

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A new medical procedure varies from traditional liposuction in that it liquefies fat, making it easier to remove.

According to a recent NBC report, the procedure, called LipoSelection, costs less than traditional liposuction.

Doctors give the patient a sedative before the procedure; however, the patient remains awake. The doctors numb the area to be treated so the patients are said to not feel any pain.

"It's selective ultrasound, the probes that we use are microcanules -- they're actually smaller, almost the size of a pencil, and at the end, it vibrates," physician's assistant Paul Mallari explained

We liquefy it, and basically, it's like taking lard -- you liquefy it like water and we take a little ... straw-like (instrument to) actually remove the fat," Mallari said

LipoSelection, a new plastic surgery procedure, has earned the nickname "lunchtime liposuction" because it takes less time and is less invasive than traditional liposuction.

Dr. F.S. Mahjouri is one of a few plastic surgeons in the Twin Cities area offering LipoSelection, which is all the rage on the coasts.

"This is a new procedure in which we can reduce the fat and improve the contour," Mahjouri said.

Mahjouri said the advance in technology allows him to use small rods that beam ultrasound energy into fat cells. That energy zaps fat cells into liquid.

"The results are superior, and the reason for that is because the energy which is generated by ultrasound is going to melt the fat cells down instead of damaging all the structures which are underneath the skin," Mahjouri said.

While the ultrasonic energy means fewer traumas to the patient, so does the trend toward smaller tools. The rods used to be twice the size of those used for the LipoSelection, meaning there's now less scarring, less bruising and a quicker recovery.

"I had the LipoSelection done on my flanks," said Melissa Edgemon, a mother of three.

Before-and-after photos show the difference the procedure made for Edgemon.

"I'm much smaller," Edgemon said. "I’m in jeans I wasn't fitting into two years ago."

Unlike conventional liposuction, LipoSelection also shrinks the skin.

"That ultrasonic energy is going to have some impact on the deeper structure of the skin," Mahjouri said. "That creates some type of controlled burn in the deeper structure of the skin, and the skin will shrink."

Depending on what you're getting done, the procedure can take anywhere from an hour to two hours.

In the future, doctors hope to also perform nonsurgical body contouring by zapping fat with high-energy ultrasound, says Dr. Mark Jewell, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
